Mr. Hohauser points out the ambiguity in the definition of provocation in the law, and our vet explains that what is most important is defining the difference between an appropriate response and an inappropriate response. For instance, a common way to greet an animal is to approach the animal with one's hand held out and down -as a way to sort of shake hands with the animal- and they respond with any sort of aggressive behavior, this is considered an inappropriate response. However, if one approaches an animal with a stick or any sort of weapon held high as a precursor to striking the animal and it bites, then this would and should be considered appropriate, as the animal is simply defending itself.
